Don't You Wish You Can Time Travel?

Frustrated. Angry. Livid. All of these emotions you are feeling all because you couldn't come up with the right thing to say in the heat of the moment. Don't you wish you could go back, and rewind the entire situation, and then say the right thing? For example, remember a time when you told your parents that you are getting good grades to avoid punishment, but they later found out that your grades are poor? YEAH. Now you are grounded for a week without a phone until your grades go up. These type of situations make a person retrospect the entire situation, and wish they can do the complete opposite of what they have done. This feeling I was describing is called: kairos.

Kairos is seizing the perfect opportunity for rhetoric. Perfect opportunity is usually defined as the right moment to take place. For example, the right moment when trying to persuade your parents to buy you something is when they are off for the weekend and mom takes a sip of her wine. Or when you are yelling at a friend about an argument, and you say the right thing to sway their opinion of the topic. Kairos occurs every day. We wish we can seize every opportunity, but it is feasible. So the main question is: how do we precisely execute the right moment consistently without failing?

In my opinion, the only way how to execute kairos at all times is by actually paying attention to close details. If you are being conscientious and fully aware of every single word that is occurring in an argument, debate, or conversation, then, you can easily capitalize and seize the opportunity. Therefore, it is a necessity to actually listen to what the person is saying when you are having a conversation instead of trying to generate a counterargument in return.

The Usage of Ethos

Today, I am going to talk about ethos! To those who do not know what ethos is, ethos is the appeal to credibility. For example, are you more willing to let your best friend, that gave you your money back the last time, borrow $20 over a stranger you just met? Most likely, you are going to let your best friend borrow the money since there is uncertainty that you will get the money back from the stranger. On the other hand, the best friend has a positive history with you causing that person to have a higher credibility. This makes you more reluctant to chose your best friend due to the past history you have with that person.

Another example of ethos is applying for a job. The first thing the interviewer always ask the interviewee is a resume of their past history. This is a necessity because the interviewer is not going to give a job to any random person that wants the job. The interviewee got to have some experience or credibility to prove that he or she is capable for the job.

However, credibility is not always a positive thing. For example, if you were involved in a fight with someone in school, your credibility of maintaining peace is excoriated due to the fact of you performing a violent action. Because of this, should we make decisions not based off of someone's credibility? Should we completely ignore all of the actions and decisions a person made in the past and look forward?

I think it is completely unfair to judge someone's past and previous decisions due to the simple fact that people can change. A person that has done wrong all their life can do a complete 360, and become conscientious of their decisions and attempt to ameliorate their well being. Then, there is a complete inverse. A person can be flawless, and then be exposed to the wrong environment or surroundings or a negative influence. Then, this can cause a person to do the complete opposite of what they have been doing. So, I think we need to ignore credibility and past decisions and focus on what people are now.

Two Passionate Topics that intertwine

Two possible topics that I am very passionate about are the lost of moral values and the manipulative social media. Social media is a propaganda that endorses profanity, blasphemy, violence, pornography, degrading of women, race wars, and most importantly, lost of community.

In the 1900s, females originally wore clothing that covered their arms and legs barely showing any skin. Now, females have skirts that are way above their knee caps, shirts that shows off their bellies, and more sexual attires. How do we get to this point? How do we reach a destination that is the complete inverse of everything in the past approved of? Social media. Social media had a huge outbreak in the early 2000s. Myspace, Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and more other social media's websites were used as a method of communication.

However, due to how powerful social media is, other people capitalize on this observation, and began to fill the minds of innocent children, teenagers, and adults with videos and photos that lacks morals values. There are too many videos of violence being shown. For example, fights, abusive relationships, gun posts, and more lethal weapons being used on other human beings that expresses lost of community. Then, religion. "Share this post or else you go to hell." Then, racist remarks on other people from different backgrounds like "blacks be like". Do not get me wrong, I am not oblivious to the posts or messages promoting anti bullying, anti violence, and more social problems. However, just liking the post does not do anything. This is never going to change because people are unaware that just liking a post do not create any social remedy. This is due to the major propaganda social media has on its people. We are losing are moral values. We are stepping on each other to reach our paths of success instead of aspiring others to climb with us up the mountain. Therefore, it is time for social media to stop hypnotizing the teenagers, the children, and adults. We are being brain washed to a point where we become dependent on social media to resolve conflicts and personal issues.
